Wednesday night, the cultural package had us walking around east London on a "Jack the Ripper" tour. Dude was a freak let me tell you. Serious issues. But then, what serial killer doesn't have issues? Anyway, it was a nice evening and we had a very comical Scotsman as our tour guide, Shaun. Jack the Ripper killed five women between August and November 1888 so this came to be known as the "Fall of Terror" and rightly so. Now, the details are pretty horrific so I'm not going to post them but if anyone wants to know I can tell you, but it's pretty gruesome.
This square is directly across the street from the Tower of London which means that back in the day it was where all the public beheadings and hangings happened. It since has been turned into a very nice park and, with the sunset, it was a nice evening.
This wall was built by the Romans so it's pretty old. Like 2000 years old. It separated, basically, Rich London from Poor London. Not that you can really see but I'm standing on the Poor London side.
Mitre Square. Wednesday night, September 30, when we had our tour was actually an anniversary of a Jack the Ripper event. September 30, 1888 was a night when two of the five murders were committed and the second murder happened in this square.
The tour was also a sort of history lesson on the late 1800's so it was an educational evening as well.
It's a good thing that there aren't crazy Jack the Ripper Copycats out celebrating an anniversary while you were there! Did you bring pepper spray?
